Cognitive tips and tricks

  • Place a symbol or picture card in an obvious place in the work area to maintain attention.

  • Organize the work environment and eliminate distractions

  • Use written cue cards with questions to focus self


Technology Assistance

  • Use a smartphone app or recorder to capture ideas at the moment, to transcribe later

  • Set a timer, alarm watch, or phone reminders to help you stay focused

  • Use a planner or smartphone as an external brain to track appointments and tasks


Internal Strategies

  • Time self to see how long attention can be maintained, then set progressively longer goals, rewarding self when goals are achieved

  • Focus on self through use of self-talk (for example, “what should I be doing now?” “what do I need to do next?”) while working on a task

  • Talk to self out loud or silently (“I am putting my keys on the table”) to help remember where things are or what one is doing

  • To focus on conversations, repeat back what has been said, paraphrasing the material (for example, repeating the time, date and place of a planned activity)

  • When reading or studying, taking rest periods and short breaks within and between tasks


Adult ADHD book recommendations

  • ADHD 2.0, by Edward Hallowell & John Rately (2022). Written by two M.D.’s with ADHD, this book explains brain functioning and processing mechanisms and highlights relationship, environment, physical, and medication supports for ADHDers.

  • Scattered minds: The origins and Healing of Attention Deficit Disorder by Gabor Mate, M.D. 

  • Divergent Mind, by Jenara Nerenberg (2021). This book is geared toward neurodivergent women or women who believe they may be neurodivergent. This book offers the author’s personal and professional experiences and offers many excellent resources.

  • Executive Functioning Skills for Adult ADHD, by Linda Hill & Sarah Davis (2023). These authors offer some traditional suggestions
    with some interesting twists for helping ADHD adults create change and build supportive habits.

  • The Neurodivergence Skills Workbook for Autism and ADHD: Cultivate Self Compassion, Live Authentically, and Be Your Own Advocate, by Jennifer Kemp and Monique Mitchelson (2024).

  • When trying to focus on a task, eliminate distractions as much as possible

  • Focus on doing one task correctly, rather than doing several things at once
